What I Love Most: The book is written in such a beautiful, powerful yet compassionate voice that you will find it difficult to move on from each agreement to the next. As you will feel like the eager student to this Life Teacher. You will be filled with inspiration – and anticipation of that next agreement. Additionally, all of your new found freedom from insecurity that each one gives.
If others tell us something we make assumptions, and if they don’t tell us something we make assumptions to fulfill our need to know and to replace the need to communicate. Even if we hear something and we don’t understand we make assumptions about what it means and then believe the assumptions. We make all sorts of assumptions because we don’t have the courage to ask questions.
Tip: Save yourself the ink and don’t bother underlining – the entire book is worth underlining 🙂
I never thought I would have much interest in reading about shame and vulnerability but wow if you don’t check out this book then self worth, self confidence and self esteem may elude you forever.
There are so many nuggets of greatness here. Especially that we are all born worthy and that vulnerability is courageous. You will embrace wholehearted living and grow in the authenticity to empower you to change what you need to live your best life. Those are not just words. These qualities become a conscious choice by which you will be nothing less than compelled to live by each day. Brown is gentle in her writing but forceful in her message about overcoming insecurity, low self worth and low self esteem.
What I Love Most: The book is mostly sectioned in to 10 Guideposts to wholehearted living. Each guidepost’s title begins with Cultivating, followed by Letting Go at the respective conclusions. For example, the first guidepost is Cultivating Self-Compassion – Letting Go of Perfection. The chapters end with how Brene´ Digs Deep by getting deliberate, inspired and going, and she then asks how you will do the same. If any self help book can empower you to overcome insecurity, it is The Gifts of Imperfection.
If we want to to live and love with our whole hearts, and if we want to engage with the world from a place of worthiness, we have to talk about the things that get in the way – especially shame, fear and vulnerability.
I will never outgrow Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth – Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose. Tolle is one of the greatest spiritual teachers of our time (of any time). He simplifies ways to accomplish what is almost impossible for many of us to put in to words – finding peace, self worth, purpose and fulfillment. This is beyond an inspirational book about self worth. His profound yet eloquent message what makes his a life changing self help book. Eckhart will awaken you to a “new consciousness” to find inner peace critical for self love.
Eckhart also talks about how insecurity can cause us to make self destructive decisions. Choices based on greed, power and/or the fear that cause even more suffering. Tolle explains that too often, people tend to think of “purpose,” as striving to reach a certain grandiose, finite goal in life. But the purpose of a human being doesn’t have anything to do with long-term goals and the passage of time. He says, “… your primary purpose—to be here fully in whatever you do so that the preciousness of the present moment remains paramount.”
What I Love Most: I talk about Eckhart often throughout Own Your Best and on social media because he is the most empowering, inspirational and centering person I have ever experienced. Yes, Eckhart Tolle is someone to experience. On practical note, this self help book has the the most efficient index I’ve seen in a long time! You can find any sub-topic you need from the anywhere in the book. So jump around as much as you want and need.
Favorite Excerpt (among too many to count):
The joy of Being, which is the only true happiness, cannot come to you through any form, possession, achievement, person, or event – through anything that happens. That joy cannot come to you – ever. It emanates from the formless dimension within you, from consciousness itself and thus is one with who you are.
Inarguably another attention-grabbing title that will make you go “hmmm, this is a self help book for insecurity?!” Yes! And even with his use of expletives – both in the title and throughout the book – right here is a powerful and inspirational read about self worth and overcoming insecurity for men and women alike!
Maybe there’s a comical irony that a title like this is under the best self help books category but the message is not funny at all. Call it tough love, self help or simply a no-nonsense approach. No matter, Bishop shows you how to give yourself a kick in the ass and tell that toxic low self esteem and negative self talk to shut the hell up!
What I Love Most: You and your “emotionally soaked self talk” can be your own worst enemies and Bishop will call you on it. He also calls you on accountability and inaction – inaction which is toxic to your well being. Aside from confronting negative self talk and low self worth, Bishop gives reasons and inspiration to take action and stop standing in your own way. This includes (and resonates with me personally) what he demonstrates in the book as “in-the-moment assertive language”.
When you have set out the goals that you are claiming as yours in life and, more importantly, relentlessly taking the actions to produce, it’s only a matter of when. We are wired to win. You are wired to win … And strive to understand yourself in deeper and more meaningful ways. True understanding of yourself and your personal constraints allows for ever unfolding degrees of freedom and success … Step out there. Trust yourself. Give yourself fully to your vast capacity for victory … Demand your greatness of yourself and repeat after me: I am wired to win.
Shall we go from in-your-face expletives to spiritual? Sure why not. Before Gabrielle Bernstein became a best-selling author, motivational speaker and life coach, she led a busy professional life as a New York City PR agent with serious partying and addiction on the side.
If you’re familiar with Marianne Williamson and/or A Course in Miracles, this will be a familiar yet fresh, New Age perspective on the teachings. I like many tried my hand at A Course in Miracles and it was too much of everything for me to handle. Gabrielle’s memoir takes you on her spiritual journey and how A Course in Miracles transformed her life. She translates (or as she calls it “Gabbifies”) the Course’s teachings into this guidebook for overcoming fear, with new perspectives and waking up loving your life and yourself.
What I Love Most: Spirit Junkie is not your ‘old-school’, raise my self confidence, get rid of my insecurity, self help book style of writing so it may not be for everyone. For me Gabrielle’s youthful, totally motivating, sassy yet edgy language emits an energy off the pages that is a welcome diversion from what I’m used to reading. This inspirational book about the self worth you were born with and will never lose will keep you engaged, inspired and uplifted!
By judging my partner, I kept our unforgiving dynamic alive. Once I released my judgment against her, I was able to take a huge step toward forgiving her. Take this time to acknowledge how you’ve been judging those people you need to forgive. Ask yourself, ‘How have I been judging?’.
