8 Inspirational Books About Self Worth – These Self Help Reads Will Annihilate Insecurity and Change Your Life
If you haven’t heard of Rachel Hollis yet, you will. Rachel is a successful business woman, writer, motivational speaker, podcast host, and mom of four.
In her latest book, Girl Stop Apologizing A Shame-Free Plan for Embracing and Achieving Your Goals, Hollis encourages readers to – for once and for all – get it together and go for what you want. The book is sectioned into three parts: Excuses to Let Go Of, Behaviors to Adopt and Skills to Acquire.
Rachel is the friend you meet for coffee, she’s your neighbor, she’s your colleague – Rachel is that person you feel like you’ve known all of your life and that you can be your authentically-flawed self around. She’ll remind you that work-life balance, especially for women, is a myth and to stop being so hard on yourself. Hollis will also motivate you to hold yourself accountable for making the time to go after your goals. If you can try to catch one of her speaking tours, you won’t regret it!

Finally, I wanted to share one of Rachel’s videos where she talks about why it was the right time for her to write Girl, Stop Apologizing. At first I felt she was speaking directly to me – but then I realized, I’m not alone, all women need a Rachel Hollis in their life.
Now more on my list of the ultimate, empowering self help books on insecurity that I’m so excited to share with you!
While we are on the subject of Rachel Hollis, Girl Wash Your Face was the self-help book that originally kicked off our review page here. If the title alone doesn’t grab you, just open to the first page and you will be changed forever. While this is her first book, Rachel is not as new on the self love books for women scene anymore. Yet she’s nevertheless a breath of fresh air. Plus she has earned her place to the top of the self-help book line, especially for women!
Her style is so much more than the cliche’ inspirational and motivational message, Hollis is fierce. She gives real-world advice (and she is specific) to help you grow and evolve in mind, spirit and body. Rachel puts a halt to the lies we tell ourselves about our self worth and will make you fall back in love with your true, authentic self! This woman is tough and vulnerable at the same time. She is self deprecating and self confident. Moreover, her positive energy is so contagious you can’t hep but catch it! Truly one of the best inspirational books about self worth for women that will growth your confidence exponentially!
What I Love Most: Through humor, painful and uplifting stories, and practical strategies, Rachel empowers you to eliminate the fears holding you back and finally get real and get it together. Before you know it, the strategies on paper transcend in to the everyday life you are absolutely meant to live.
What if the hard stuff, the amazing stuff, the love, the joy, the hope, the fear, the weird stuff, the funny stuff, the stuff that takes you so low you’re lying on the floor crying and thinking, How did I get here? . . . What if none of it is happening to you? What if all of it is happening for you?
The most life changing, inspirational books about self worth and self love are the ones that make your eyes brighten, your mouth open and your mind rush to keep up with the words on page. You just cannot read fast enough. Consequently, this is what will undoubtedly happen when you hold The Four Agreements in your hands.
The Four Agreements is all about freedom from a belief system, agreements we make with ourselves and others, that limits our potential and creates unhappiness and low self worth. These are the forces that prevent us from living an authentic life.
Sure anyone can easily google The Four Agreements to reveal them. If you do, you will surely feel inspired enough to print them out, stick them on the refrigerator and go about your day feeling evolved and worthy (not that there’s anything wrong with that). But, if you really are thirsty for improving your self esteem or maybe you can’t even pinpoint the type of self help book for which you are looking, nevertheless here is where you will find it!
What I Love Most: The book is written in such a beautiful, powerful yet compassionate voice that you will find it difficult to move on from one “agreement” to the next. As you will feel like the eager student craving to learn more and more from this Life Teacher. You will be filled with inspiration – and anticipation of that next agreement. The growth and expansion you experience out of a new sense of freedom from insecurity will be truly measurable in almost a literal sense.
If others tell us something we make assumptions, and if they don’t tell us something we make assumptions to fulfill our need to know and to replace the need to communicate. Even if we hear something and we don’t understand we make assumptions about what it means and then believe the assumptions. We make all sorts of assumptions because we don’t have the courage to ask questions.
Tip: Save yourself the ink and don’t bother underlining – the entire book is worth underlining 🙂
I never thought I would have much interest in reading about shame and vulnerability but wow if you don’t check out this book then self worth, self confidence and self esteem may elude you forever.
There are so many nuggets of greatness here. Especially that we are all born worthy and that vulnerability is courageous. You will embrace wholehearted living and grow in the authenticity to empower you to change what you need to live your best life. Those are not just words. These qualities become a conscious choice by which you will be nothing less than compelled to live by each day. Brown is gentle in her writing but powerful in her message about women overcoming insecurity, low self worth and low self esteem.
What I Love Most: The book is essentially sectioned in to 10 Guideposts to wholehearted living. Each guidepost’s title language begins with Cultivating, followed by Letting Go at their respective conclusions. So for example, the first guidepost is Cultivating Self-Compassion – Letting Go of Perfection. The chapters end with how Brene´ personally Digs Deep by getting deliberate, inspired and going. Then she then asks how you will do the same. If any self help book can completely empower you to overcome insecurity, not feeling good about yourself or not accepting yourself for who you are, it is The Gifts of Imperfection.
If we want to to live and love with our whole hearts, and if we want to engage with the world from a place of worthiness, we have to talk about the things that get in the way – especially shame, fear and vulnerability.
I will never outgrow Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth – Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose. Tolle is one of the greatest spiritual teachers of our time (of any time). He simplifies ways to accomplish what is almost impossible for many of us to put in to words – finding peace, self worth, purpose and fulfillment. This is beyond an inspirational book about self worth. His profound yet eloquent message what makes his a life changing self help book. Eckhart will awaken you to a “new consciousness” to find inner peace critical for self love.
Eckhart also talks about how insecurity can cause us to make self destructive decisions. Choices based on greed, power and/or the fear that cause even more suffering. Tolle explains that too often, men and women of any age tend to think of “purpose,” as striving to reach a certain grandiose, finite goal in life. But the purpose of a human being doesn’t have anything to do with long-term goals and the passage of time. He says, “… your primary purpose—to be here fully in whatever you do so that the preciousness of the present moment remains paramount.” Eckhart’s inspirational message will change you forever.
What I Love Most: I talk about Eckhart often throughout Own Your Best and on social media because he is the most empowering, inspirational and centering person I have ever experienced. Yes, Eckhart Tolle is someone to experience. On practical note, this self help book has the the most efficient index I’ve seen in a long time! You can find any sub-topic you need from anywhere in the book. So jump around as much as you want and need. Finally, if you have a few minutes, glance over to the right sidebar on any page of this website to watch a brief and enjoyable video of Eckhart explaining “presence”.
Favorite Excerpt (among so many):
The joy of Being, which is the only true happiness, cannot come to you through any form, possession, achievement, person, or event – through anything that happens. That joy cannot come to you – ever. It emanates from the formless dimension within you, from consciousness itself and thus is one with who you are.
Inarguably another attention-grabbing title that will make you think “hmmm, this is a self help book for insecurity?!” Yes! And even with his free use of expletives – both in the title and throughout the book – right here is a powerful and inspirational read about self worth and overcoming insecurity for men and women alike!
Maybe there’s a comical irony that a title like this is under the “best self help books” category, but the message is not funny at all. Call it tough love, self help, slap the forehead, or simply a no-nonsense approach. No matter how you look it, Bishop shows you how to give yourself a swift, loving kick in the ass and tell that toxic low self esteem and negative self talk to shut the hell up! Bishop’s message is clear and concise. You are essentially what you do and DO NOT do.
What I Love Most: You and your “emotionally soaked self talk” can be your own worst enemies and Bishop will call you on it. He also calls you on accountability and inaction. For his lesson is essentially that inaction and complacency are toxic to your well being. Aside from confronting negative self talk and low self worth, Bishop gives empowering reasons and inspiration to take action and stop standing in your own way. Ones that you just cannot turn away from. This includes (and resonates with me personally) what he demonstrates in the book as “in-the-moment assertive language”.
When you have set out the goals that you are claiming as yours in life and, more importantly, relentlessly taking the actions to produce, it’s only a matter of when. We are wired to win. You are wired to win … And strive to understand yourself in deeper and more meaningful ways. True understanding of yourself and your personal constraints allows for ever unfolding degrees of freedom and success … Step out there. Trust yourself. Give yourself fully to your vast capacity for victory … Demand your greatness of yourself and repeat after me: I am wired to win.
Shall we go from in-your-face expletives to spiritual? Sure why not. Before Gabrielle Bernstein became a best-selling author, motivational speaker and life coach, she led a busy professional life as a New York City PR agent with serious partying and addiction on the side.
If you’re familiar with Marianne Williamson and/or A Course in Miracles, this will be a familiar yet fresh, New Age perspective on the teachings. I like many tried my hand at A Course in Miracles and it was too much of everything for me to handle. Gabrielle’s memoir takes you on her spiritual journey and how A Course in Miracles transformed her life. She translates (or as she calls it “Gabbifies”) the Course’s teachings into this guidebook for overcoming fear, with new perspectives and waking up loving your life and yourself. Gabrielle’s real life strategies will put an end to negative inner dialogue that may’ve plagued you in the past. A powerful self-acceptance and -compassion guidebook.
What I Love Most: Spirit Junkie is not your ‘old-school’, please raise my self confidence, magically get rid of my insecurity, self help book style of writing. So it may not be for everyone. But fear not, she’s no holy roller either. For me, Gabrielle’s youthful, totally motivating, sassy yet edgy language emits an energy off the pages that is a welcome diversion from what I’ve been reading these days. This essentially an inspirational book reminding you of the self worth you were born with and will never lose. Bernstein’s life strategies will keep you engaged, inspired and definitely uplifted!
By judging my partner, I kept our unforgiving dynamic alive. Once I released my judgment against her, I was able to take a huge step toward forgiving her. Take this time to acknowledge how you’ve been judging those people you need to forgive. Ask yourself, ‘How have I been judging?’.
I’m really excited to share another one of my latest add-ons to our best self-help books for insecurity and low self-esteem. While The Wisdom of Insecurity: A Message for an Age of Anxiety is new to me, it’s actually been out since 2011.
I recommend this book because it left me encouraged and empowered. The Wisdom of Insecurity is not what you might expect from a self-help book for insecurity. Watts not only inspires with positivity, he inspires with VISION. Alan Watts gives both women and men fresh, new ways of looking at life using the critical practice of self-examination.
The amount of men, women, and even children suffering from anxiety today is unprecedented. We are so overwhelmed by work, social media, finances and the work-life balancing act that we are not living fully.
Watts’ background in Eastern philosophy and religion is the foundation of his wisdom and writing. He tells us that it is time to finally and fully acknowledge what we don’t know. That we don’t have all of the answers. Stop living in the past and creating possible outcomes (usually negative) and start living FULLY in the now.
What I love most: The Wisdom of Insecurity reminds me that nothing – not joy, not peace and not happiness – is gained from anticipating the future nor dwelling on the past. Both Watts and Eckhart Tolle are on the same page in their teachings about knowing that it is only by living in the present moment that LIFE can be fully and purely experienced.
Watts gives us no choice but to recognize the present moment is the only road to travel on in the journey of life.OYB Best Self Help Books
A final note about book’s introduction by Deepak Chopra, author, public speaker, alternative medicine advocate, and a prominent figure in the New Age movement. Deepak’s intro highlights the following irony of our struggles with insecurity. He points out Watt’s message in that our search for answers and “security” is in actuality the underlying cause for our insecurity in the first place.
But you cannot understand life and its mysteries as long as you try to grasp it. Indeed, you cannot grasp it, just as you cannot walk off with a river in a bucket. If you try to capture running water in a bucket, it is clear that you do not understand it and that you will always be disappointed, for in the bucket the water does not run. To “have” running water you must let go of it and let it run.

When You Close the Book – They Don’t Call it Self-Help for Nothing
Now I have a question for you…What will you do when you close the book?
As much as I adore these authors and their inspiring messages, they don’t know you. The real you. And there’s no self-help book, no social media influencer, no podcast or YouTube change-your-life-video, and no motivational quote that will do the work for you.
When you close the book, it’s up to you to make the commitment of self-improvement and growth.
And just so you know, whatever strides you make toward overcoming insecurity and making a positive change will only bring out “that something” which has been in you all along.
So you see, you don’t need to “change who you are.” I believe we all just need to tap in to our core goodness. And GROW IN TO who we are meant to be. It’s time to grow in to what your future self is pleading with you to be.
So as you continue your journey of “becoming,” remember that it is merely who you truly are who you’ve brought up to the surface to shine! – Love, Own Your Best ♥️
